Spring Activities

Spring in Kananaskis brings a vibrant transformation to the wilderness. As the snow melts and nature awakens, this is the perfect time to experience the beauty of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains through a variety of spring activities, including wildlife watching, star gazing, and early-season hiking and mountain biking.

Things to do in Kananaskis in Spring

In Spring, the melting of ice and snow provides an enchanting soundtrack as the warmth and moisture brings new growth and delicate wildflowers to the Kananaskis landscape. Depending on the timing of the melt, you may catch some of the last winter adventures or the first summer adventures. With fewer options for outdoor adventures, Spring is also a great time to focus on relaxation and rejuvenation as you take in the beauty of the natural surroundings. Not to mention, spring is also the least busy time of year in the Rockies, you’ll enjoy a more peaceful experience with fewer crowds on trails and at viewpoints.

Hiking & Sightseeing

The world-renowned hiking trails of Kananaskis offer something for everyone. In the Spring, if you want to avoid snow it’s best to stick to lower elevation hikes and viewpoints like Blackshale Suspension Bridge, Kananaskis Lakes, Watridge Lake and Spray Lakes.

For spring hiking, make sure to wear waterproof shoes, even on these trails, as you may still encounter snow and trails may be wet from the meltwater. Consider bringing crampons or micro-spikes just in case you encounter icy trail conditions. Or, if the snow is deep enough, which it often is in early spring, you may want to try snowshoeing!

To help you choose the trail that’s right for you, we’ve put together a list of the best local hiking trails & viewpoints.

Stargazing

Kananaskis Country is one of Alberta’s best destinations for stargazing – especially at Mount Engadine thanks to its remote location and pristine, dark skies. Free from light pollution, this area offers incredible views of constellations, the Milky Way, and even the occasional Northern Lights. Spring is a great time for stargazing as temperatures start to warm up, but there are still longer hours of darkness than in summer. See our Stargazing Guide for more details and tips.
